It’s no secret that many outdoor activity spaces are dominated by whiteness, such as hiking, cycling, and camping. As these outdoor activities can be more niche than other activities, there's no lack of studies and perspectives that show that it creates an in-culture that proves difficult for racialized people to permeate.
With the numerous proven positive effects of being outdoors such as physical and mental health, community and belonging, and increased positive environmental stewardship attitudes, it’s necessary for racialized people to have an opportunity to enjoy these activities, too.
This August 2023, Environment Hamilton is thrilled to be providing this space with the Hamilton Center for Civic Inclusion through the launch of an outdoors group called New Petals. Programming includes no-cost introductions to vegetable gardening, birding, hiking, canoeing, camping and more—and is open to racialized folk of all ages and skill levels.
