An Evening With Jack Gibbons - Ontario Clean Air Alliance

Join Environment Hamilton and Hamilton 350 for an evening with Jack Gibbons from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance. Jack will be speaking about the Enbridge Gas pipeline proposed to run through rural Hamilton.

Enbridge Gas wants to build a giant pipeline through Hamilton, including through the Beverly Swamp, home to rare species and source of three creeks. Why? To allow us to increase imports of fracked gas from the United States.

The pipeline will set the stage for a huge increase in use of polluting gas-fired generating plants, boosting greenhouse gas emissions from these stations by 400%.

And to pay for the pipeline, Enbridge Gas plans to increase rates for gas consumers throughout Ontario by $120 million.

At the same time, the provincial government is moving forward with extending and rebuilding our aging nuclear infrastructure, at very high cost and risk to the ON tax- and ratepayer. And they’re planning to use natural gas to fill the gaps when reactors come off-line.

Fortunately, there is no need for this pipeline, increased use of natural gas, or for the nuclear rebuilds. Ontario can keep its lights on at a lower cost and with much less pollution by restoring and expanding energy efficiency programs and by contracting for low-cost water power from Quebec as well as made-in-ON green energy.
