Friendly Streets Project Assistant:
The assistant will help the Project Manager to develop and implement public education and outreach efforts focused on engaging BIPOC community members in conversations about walkability/ bikeability in urban Hamilton. Efforts will include raising public awareness about the challenges black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) experience using active transportation in downtown neighbourhoods and engaging BIPOC residents in conversations about exploring potential solutions to barriers and challenges – including poor urban air quality. The assistant will also help with assessments of walking and cycling infrastructure, and exploring how streetscapes can be improved through greening (tree planting, pollinator beds).
Trees Please Project Assistant:
The assistant will help the Project Manager with implementing the Trees Please initiative in Hamilton East/Stoney Creek. Duties will include helping to recruit and train community volunteers to help project staff audit urban tree health, measure local air quality, help to organize tree plantings on city land, help with free tree giveaways, help to organize volunteers to follow up with on-going tree stewardship, and provide support to the Trees From Seeds initiative including distributing free native tree seedlings and helping to teach volunteers to identify native trees, collect seed and prepare that seed for seedling germination in 2022.
Hamilton Community Climate Action Network Assistants (2 positions):
The assistants will help Project Managers to implement the Hamilton Community Climate Action Action initiative, a project focused on helping residents learn what they can do to make a difference at home and in their neighbourhood, working collaboratively with their neighbours, to address the climate crisis. The assistants will help staff develop and implement public education and outreach efforts focused on mitigating and adapting to climate impacts in Hamilton. Efforts will include raising public awareness about the climate crisis and helping people to understand what they can do to make a difference. This will include developing programming and learning opportunities focused on: active transportation and public transportation, building complete communities via smart urban growth management, greening home and neighbourhood with native trees and pollinator plants, and helping neighbourhoods to prepare for extreme weather events. The assistants will also help with preparing written materials and social medial communications for the project, and writing project-related blog posts to share project information and progress.
